The subtlety of an effective portrait might imply simplicity or ease of creation. In reality, it belies the difficulty in physically representing intangible qualities of character. Qualities that rest beyond the eyes, ears, nose and mouth, but communicate values such as personality and outlook.

When photographing children, I feel not only that I’m capturing a fleeting moment, because they grow and develop so quickly, but also that I’m showing a sense of discovery. My portraits aren’t just about gleaming smiles and happiness, but seriousness and reflection as well… Moments of knowing, of learning, of vulnerability and inquisitiveness. Characteristics you recognise, expressions and mannerisms that represent and even define your family at a single point in time.
